Yellowstone Adventure 2023 - Week Eight

Business is really picking up.  Tourist season is starting off with a bang and will reach a peak sometime in mid July.  The store is very busy and the grocery section is selling a lot of stuff.  I got 80,333 steps in, which equates roughly to 38 miles.  In case your wondering how I track that statistic.  My Samsung watch tracks all my activity.  I have not weighed myself lately, but I think I have lost a few pounds since I have come here to work.

The highlights, or low lights, of the week are as follows.  We had another worker sent out this week.  It seems he decided that he had enough of being ordered around by his boss and he asked him to step outside.  He really did not think that through very well because that little action got him a quick trip to West Yellowstone and unemployed.  I do not understand the minds of kids like that.  He never thought of what his actions would do and he basically had no place to go when he was expelled from the park.  He did not have a home to go to or a vehicle that was reliable enough to get him anywhere.  His vehicle basically sat in the parking lot with its bumper leaning against it ever since he got here.  I talked to our dorm coordinator and it seems he had girlfriend issues that got into his head so much he always seemed to be an angry young man.  I prayed for him, as I did the others, in hopes that they figure things out in life before they dig themselves a hole that they cannot get out of.

The weather here has turned cold and rainy.  Which is good to keep the mosquito season away for a few more days.  It does not seem to slow down the tourists, as I assume they had plans and was going to execute those plans even in the rain.  We are supposed to get cold enough next week that we may get snow in the evening/night at high elevations.  Old Faithful sits at 8,000 feet, so we may get some snow for a little while.  Ron told me that last year around June 24th Old Faithful got six inches of snow.  So there is always a chance here to get winter even through spring and summer.

This week I had to go to the local clinic to get my left eye checked.  I thought I had pink eye, but it turned out that I got something into it at sometime and I rubbed it and scratched it.  After being examined I got a prescription of anti-bacterial drops that I have to put in several times a day.  The interesting thing about this trip to the clinic was when I exited the clinic.  I left by the entrance door and stepped down the steps to the sidewalk, all the while looking at the directions for the eye drops.  I stepped onto the sidewalk and looked up to see people staring at me.  I looked where they were looking and saw a bison on the side walk to my right about fifteen yards.  I laughed and they laughed and pointed to my left.  I looked to my left and another bison was at the bottom of the stairs that I totally did not see and he was 10 feet from me.  Well I kept on walking and shaking my head and these beasts.  We have a few bison hanging around our area.  These bison are basically old males that do not belong to the herd anymore.  They are too old to fight others during rutting season.  So they are just roaming around, usually alone, in various areas until they get too old to fend off predators or die of natural causes.  The circle of life.

The laugh of the week was when I was inside the pop and beer cooler stocking drinks.  I heard a customer open their door to get a drink, but the lady started yelling at me, "Heh Hello".  I leaned down and looked through the beer cans and she asks, "Which one of these beers is a Pilsner?"  I told her I had not clue as I did not drink.  She jsut gave a guttural "Humph", and slammed to door shut.  It astounds me how many come to the park and drink versus just hike and see God's workmanship.

That is about all.  Take care and thanks for reading.

One of the old bisons I met on my walk around the area.
